Jefferson County Roads and Transportation has opened the "Turbo" roundabout at Old Tuscaloosa Hwy. It's only the second one of its size in the Country (not a typo - Country). What makes it a "Turbo" roundabout? It's size. In particular, it is a 5-leg roundabout that provides access to Lowetown Rd, Old Tuscaloosa Hwy, the new Smucker's plant entrance and Cross Drive -- all without stopping traffic. It should keep the industrial traffic moving, while also providing greater safety over a traditional intersection with a signal or stop sign. Construction was done by Chilton Construction with a budget of $11,133,759.68 but finished under budget at $10,836,169.53.
What's next?
Starting in April in the same area is the McAshan drive expansion and interchange off exit 104 on I-20/59. This project is in partnership with ALDOT and is what is called a diverging diamond. The County will be widening McAshan to coordinate with the new interchange. It has 2 phases and will take 2 years to complete. Also, later this summer we are planning to start the Lakeshore Parkway extension project. That project is planed to take 2 years.
You can sign up for updates for these projects on the Roads and Transportation webpage, click here, then select projects. We will also be providing updates here, and on the County's social media pages.
Jefferson County livestreams all of our Commission Meetings and the Planning and Zoning Meetings and keeps an archive on its website that can be viewed anytime. Pre-Commission meetings are held on Tuesday's every other week, that is where items are vetted by Commissioners and they can ask questions to staff about a particular item on the agenda. If an item is passed in Pre-Commission, it moves to the Commission agenda (held on the following Thursday) where they vote on final approval. Note: When the Planning and Zoning Commission approves an item, it still has to come before the Commission for final approval. It's a process that allows for checks at several points along the way.
