The Jefferson County Commission has partnered with the Osprey Initiative to fund 5 new Litter Gitters across the county to help keep key lakes and rivers clean. The use of these devices was started by the Freshwater Land Trust working with the Osprey Initiative. When the County was initially approached Commissioner Knight funded one site, but after seeing the success, they County wanted to do more. The Commission has approved funding $125,000 a year for three years for five additional locations. In the beginning the Osprey Initiative targeted some locations in Birmingham that were high litter/run-off sites. They are now expanding in two tributaries that flow into the Cahaba River (a major source of drinking water) as well as 2 devices in tributaries that flow into Valley Creek near Johns Rd in Adger, and Village Creek near Minor Parkway (to catch liter before it reaches Bayview Lake), then another will be in Beaver Creek at Bicentennial Park capturing litter before it flows into Turkey Creek.
Please do not throw trash out of your car window. Help us keep Jefferson County clean.
We are entering the final stages of this project, which will require some traffic pattern changes. Starting July 8 through late fall there will be a detour for traffic traveling from Eastern Valley Road to Pocahontas Rd, all traffic will be redirected from Dickey Springs Rd to Bell Hill Rd. Commuters may want to consider alternate routes where possible during this transition period. You can see more projects from the Roads and Transportation Department on their webpage and also subscribe for updates.
Jefferson County offices will be closed on Thursday, July 4, 2024, for Independence Day. We look forward to serving you when we reopen on July 5th. Have a safe and happy holiday!
