Property valuation notices were mailed on Friday, May 24th from the Jefferson County Board of Equalization. The protest period is open until June 24, 2024. If you want to file a protest you can do so online by going here, or you can mail or hand deliver your protest request to us. In your protest you must submit evidence to substantiate your objection to the value. Your protest can result in an increase, a decrease, or no change in value based on the evidence you provide. More information on the process can be found here.
Please note that the BOE follows a state mandated formula for determining these values. If you have questions you can call the Birmingham Office at 205-325-5566 or Bessemer 205-481-4120.
Work continues for Jefferson County Roads & Transportation’s Construction, Engineering, & Inspection (CE&I) team, who is managing the progress of the Bell Hill Road project. The contractor and utility crews met the first critical deadline of utility relocations running to the new UAB Medical West Hospital. This was a big milestone and was critical for medical professionals to begin preparing for patients.
The road contractor is currently placing asphalt on Letson Farms Parkway and the New Bell Hill Road in preparation of shifting traffic patterns to the new road in June. The new traffic route will extend from Pediatrics West to Letson Farms Parkway and to the new access of UAB Medical West, where the new road will connect with existing Bell Hill Road (traveling east).
In the next few months, construction will concentrate on the existing Bell Hill Road and work west towards Eastern Valley Road. Utility relocations, retaining wall construction, and the tie-in extension for access to the Holiday Inn are some of the planned items of work.
To limit road construction during inconvenient travel times, we are scheduling night work and local traffic only detours periodically to avoid delays as much as possible. We greatly appreciate your continued patience and understanding. Social media postings will continue to notify in advance of delays, detours, and temporary closures.
Jefferson County is removing material on the bank on the north side of Forest Rd, between Wickstead Rd and Forest Circle to improve sight distance. Only one lane will be closed and traffic control will be in place. Work will start today, June 3, and should be complete by June 5. If you can take an alternate route it will help with traffic congestion. We appreciate your patience.
Jefferson County will have two more household drop-off events this year. The first is an Electronics and Paper Shredding event that will be Saturday, June 8 from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the Jefferson County Valley Water Reclamation Facility at 3923 Clear Water Drive, Bessemer, AL 35023.
The second is our Household Hazardous Waste Event on Oct. 19 at Camp Bessemer and Camp Ketona.
If you have questions about what is accepted please call our stormwater program at 205-325-8741.
