Spring is here (and it feels like summer). It's the time of year when people are working in their yards and want everything to be green and pretty. We are with you on that, but over fertilizing your yard can be harmful to your lawn and the environment. We sat down with Deputy Director of Environmental Services, Margaret Tanner, and our Stormwater Program Education Coordinator Hanna Berres (who is also a Master Gardner) for some tips that will not only save you money -- but will save your lawn. This podcast is a quick 10-minute listen.

On Friday, Commissioner Sheila Tyson and the Community Services Department joined Brighton Mayor Eddie Cooper and Brighton City Councilors for the groundbreaking of a new storm shelter that is funded by the Jefferson County Commission. The Commission allocates roughly $1-million dollars a year to storm shelter construction. Other locations in development this year are Tarrant (under construction), Birmingport (awaiting contract) and Irondale (looking for location). There are currently 38 storm shelters in Jefferson County and they are listed on the Jefferson County EMA website.
