County Leadership Met With Amwaste

The County Manager and representatives from Commissioner offices met with the leadership of Amwaste last week to let them know we were extremely frustrated with this latest transition they decided to make and the disruption in service it has caused to citizens.

In short, Amwaste moved some customers to a new pickup date (customers should have received a notice from Amwaste). But, they admittedly did not execute this transition and are still challenged in getting to some areas on a consistent basis. 

If they are still not picking up your garbage on a consistent basis, or not at all, please use the MyJeffCo app to report it, if you can't get through to Amwaste customer service. 

The County's contract with Amwaste is up in March of 2025. The County is weighing the option of bidding out this service again. Please know that if we do bid this out, we have to accept the lowest bidder -- its state law.

Electronics/TV's Paper Shredding Event - May 11

If you missed the spring Hazardous Waste Day event, you can still take advantage of our next Electronics/TV's and Paper Shredding event on May 11 from 9 a.m. - 11:30 a.m. at the Center Point Satellite Courthouse, 2651 Center Point Parkway, 35215. Just put your items in the trunk or back of your pickup and our volunteers will do the rest. Please be assured that your computer hard drives are shredded by our vendor Protec, and electronics are recycled -- which keeps them out of our landfill. 

Low Cost Grocery Opens in Forestdale Thanks to Commission Support

Hunger solutions company Goodr, Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales, and the Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation will cut the ribbon at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 27 on the new Goodr Grocery Store in Daniel Payne Plaza, 1500 Daniel Payne Dr.

Located in the Forestdale community the new concept store model will provide residents with a low-cost shopping experience that expands on the existing food bank program known as Daniel's Pantry. It is a collaboration among the organizations, the Jefferson County Commission and the City of Birmingham. The Commission provided $472,782.96 to the Daniel Payne Legacy Village Foundation for this new concept store to help address food insecurities.

Commission funding came from a federal ARPA grant (FAIN SLFRP1176) provided to the Commission by the U.S. Dept. of the Treasury. 

Community Volunteer Cleanups Making a Difference!

As a part of its storm water program, Jefferson County assists communities in organizing and executing community roadside cleanups. These cleanups not only help beautify our neighborhoods, but it also keeps garbage from washing into our lakes and streams. You can find upcoming cleanups on our main calendar on jccal.org or on our Facebook page (Jefferson County, AL)  Just look at the results: * Mulga Loop Road Cleanup - 114 people, 3.5 tons of litter removed, and .014 tons of plastic bottles and cans were recycled.  * Dogwood Rove Rd - 18 people, 6.25 tons of litter removed, and 18.27 pounds of plastic bottles and cans were recycled.  * Martintown Raimund - 10 people, 1 ton of litter removed, 15 pounds of plastic bottles and cans were recycled.  * Oak Grove High School - 40 students, .16 tons of litter removed.  * Sicard Hollow Road - 17 people, 1 ton of litter removed, 25.3 pounds of plastic bottles and cans were recycled. * Sterilite Drive & Meadow Craft Road - 125 KAMTEC staff and families, 250 bags of litter removed.  If you are interested in having a cleanup in your neighborhood call us at 205-325-8741.
