Jefferson County has temporarily closed the bridge on Parkwood Road to resurface it and make other structural improvements. Part of those structural improvements involve replacing the concrete superstructure, bridge approach work, installing new guardrails, and implementing erosion control measures at the bridge abutments. To do all this, the old superstructure has to be taken out. So while not a full bridge replacement, it is a great deal of work and expect to the work to be complete by the end of September. We realize this is an inconvenience for citizens in the area and we appreciate their patience with this work to make the bridge safer.
Spring is in full effect and its time to clean out your garage and dispose of all those nasty old pesticides and paint cans. The next Hazardous Waste Drop Off Day will be April 13 at three locations:
- First Baptist Church Gardendale - South Location
- Classic Car Motoring in Irondale
- City of Bessemer Public Works Laydown Yard
Check the photo for all the items that will be accepted during the event. And thanks in advance for helping keep Jefferson County Clean!
If you live in the McCalla area you can't help but notice the new hospital -- its amazing! Many are asking if the road work on Bell Hill will be completed on time, the short answer is yes. The following is additional information that you may find helpful.
- Several unforeseen construction discoveries have required additional time and coordination by contractors and utility crews, but everyone is making this project their priority so deadlines will be met.
- Phase I of utilities (power, internet, cable, sewer, water, gas, and storm water drainage) and access to the new UAB Medical West will be ready in May, so staff can prepare for the grand opening in August.
- The contractor is currently placing a dense grade base material in preparation for asphalt for the new Bell Hill Road running from Pediatrics West to Letson Farms Parkway and the new hospital access. Traffic will be changed over to this new section in the coming months to allow for other utility work and roadway buildup operations to occur.
- To limit the temporary road closures and inconvenient travel times, we are working with school schedules and scheduling night work periodically to lessen the impact.
Please, please, continue to watch construction signs and message boards when going through this area, slow down, and watch for workers.

Jefferson County Roads and Transportation has been working on a way to provide our citizens with a complete look at projects that we are working on. We have uploaded information on a number of projects in a web tool called "Clear Gov". You can access it from the jccal.org Roads and Transportation webpage. Click on the link in the image or on the link below. Once on the page, click "projects" and you will see the list. The vertical scroll bar will let you see more projects. Click on a project and it will bring up a complete overview, budget, timeline, and project maps. We will continue to add to this database and update it often. We hope you enjoy this new transparent look at how your tax dollars are at work.
