What is a Virtual Naturalist Program?

During social distancing DeSoto State Park will continue to bring fun and educational programs to you via video, photos, and social media posts about hikes, blooms, and waterfalls on our Facebook Page!

Appalachian Sandwort Sandwort is another tough plant that can live in thin soil and hot rocky areas. It also has a short growing period, much like Elf Orpine and is only about 6 in. tall. Appalachian Sandwort is just starting to bloom now. Its tiny little white blooms are spectacular in mass among the greens of lichen and reds of Elf Orpine. If you do get to visit a glade in the park sometime, be sure to think like a ant and marvel at the tiny forest in the rocky depressions.

DeSoto’s Silver Trail 2.7 miles Moderate. Marked with some silver blazes, and the occasional metal diamond on a tree to denote that this trail is also a mountain bike trail. A very pretty winding trail, especially if you want some extra mileage that takes you past sandstone rock outcrops and mixed hardwood forest.

Indian Falls This interesting waterfall falls about 20 feet into a small ravine, located just across the road from the Talmadge Butler Trailhead. Indian Falls is about 0.1 miles from the trailhead and is easily reached over a small footpath. A wooden footbridge crosses over the top of this beautiful sight.
