There are NO major rule changes this year! We try to adopt the National Rules to allow for consistency and to make sure Alabama teams qualifying for Nationals are not at a disadvantage. There are a few deviations in the state rules due to circumstances that are unique to our state and our schools. Please be familiar with both sets of rules if you plan to compete.
One point of clarification: There is no national or state rule preventing a school from having more than one team. Schools may bring more than one team to regionals this year, however, schools may only compete at ONE regional event.
Mandatory Reporting Requirement
Most of you should be aware of the mandatory online report that must be filed each year at www.naspbai.org. Every school must have at least one instructor report that in-school lessons were taught at that school. Every instructor must also report for themselves. A report must be submitted even if you did not teach NASP in the past year! Also, please read the information regarding the 10 hour in-school instruction rule under the “New Procedure When Registering for Tournaments” paragraph.
Academic Archer
The National Archery in the Schools Program and Easton Technical Products continue to support the popular NASP Academic Archer Program. More than 25,000 students enrolled in the Academic Archer Program last year from schools in the US, Canada, and the British Virgin Islands. Alabama was recognized by NASP for having the fifth highest level of participation.
Now you have a chance to recognize your students for what they do in the classroom as well as on the archery range. The Archery in the Schools program is committed to the in-school aspect of the program and the many benefits that archery can provide to both students and teachers. Register your students today and make Alabama number one worldwide in this program!
NASP continues to ensure the 10 hour rule of instruction is met by each school that competes in a tournament. Teachers will now have to “commit” to complying with this rule. The commitment screen can be accessed by logging in at nasptournaments.org. After logging in, the coach can select the “School” button in the black bar, then select “School Manager.” On the “School Manager” screen, they can select their school(s). On the school page, the coach will see “2018-2019 In-School Requirement Commit Now” button. When they select the commit button, they will be taken to a new page. This new page describes the in-school requirement including why we require in-school and what the in-school lessons must include. It then asks the coach to commit to making sure the in-school requirement is met for the school year. Finally, it informs the coach that if the school competes and the in-school lessons are not taught and reported, the coach will lose their certification and that the school will be ineligible for competition during the next school year (2019-2020). If a school attempts to register for any competitions prior to making this commitment, they will receive an error massage and a link to the “commitment page.”
NASP/IBO 3D
The NASP/IBO 3D Challenge continues to be the largest youth 3D archery program ever and now includes NASP archers from 40 states. Alabama held its first NASP/IBO 3D State Tournament in February of this year with 117 archers taking part. The next tournament will be held March 22-23, 2019, at the Cullman Civic Center in Cullman, Ala. The tournament will be open to any schools that want to compete. This tournament is a great warm-up before the State competition and offers a chance to compete at the State Championship level even if your school doesn't qualify for the state bullseye tournament. Registration will take place online at www.nasptournaments.org. Pre-registration for the Alabama NASP/IBO 3D State Tournament will begin on February 1, 2019, with full registration opening on February 19. The rules can be found here.
State Championship
The Alabama State Championship will be held at the Montgomery Multiplex at Cramton Bowl on April 4-5, 2019. This year, we are adding four flights on Thursday to accommodate more teams. Pre-registration will open March 5, 2019, with full registration opening on March 19. Last year, over 1,200 archers competed at the State Championship and this year we expect to accommodate more than 1,900.
The schedule is set for the 2019 Regional Tournaments and it's never too early to start practicing! One great thing about regionals is there is no limit on the number of students you can bring. This gives everyone a chance to experience the excitement of competition. Team scores from all of the regionals will be ranked and invitations to the State Tournament will be extended based on those rankings across all three divisions. Please remember that your team can only compete in one regional tournament.
The On Target for Life Awards were created to provide an opportunity to identify, recognize, and celebrate the actions of the special people that are a part of any local NASP. Through their examples, NASP continues to make a difference at the local level - One Arrow at a Time! Nominations began September 1, 2018.
The six categories are: 1. Community Service Award (Team Award), 2. Bullseye Award (Student Award), 3. Superhero Award (Volunteer Award), 4. Courage Award (Student Award), 5. Outstanding Alumni Award (Alumni Award), 6. Coach of the Year (Coach/Educator Award)
Information on the Academic Archer program and the On Target for Life Awards is available on the NASP website, naspschools.org, or by contacting Dr. Tommy Floyd at tommy.floyd@naspschools.org.
Please make sure all your students watch the attached video before State! This video demonstrates how one archer calls and bubbles the scorecard of the other archer and vice versa.
Timesheets should be completed for all schools that wish to compete in the NASP State Tournament and for all schools that are NOT Title One Schools. The purpose of the timesheet is to verify that the NASP program was conducted for at least two weeks during the school year, AND for those of you that are NOT at Title One Schools. We can use the time you teach NASP as matching money for the program. This adds up to increased funding for the program, so please fill out those timesheets and send them in! Timesheets and examples of how to fill them out can be found on the NASP Teacher’s Resource Page.
