Campfire Talks, Classes, Demonstrations, Guided Interpretive or Fitness Hikes, Tours, Outdoor Adventures, Workshops......topics covering art, science, nature, and much more!
Most programs are free, or charge a small supply fee.
DeSoto State Park also adds community events such as classes, festivals, workshops, local craft shows, etc to our calendar so that we can help our guests and visitors make their visit to Lookout Mountain, Alabama even more memorable.

Seven Pines Survival has been working with DeSoto State Park since 2014. Along with Seven Pines Survival, we provide hands on educational programs that allow you to connect and learn from nature in a way that will build a greater application for the natural world around us. Come and participate in nature with one of Seven Pines Survival's programs!
 Guided Backpacking Trip for Beginners Learn all you need to know so that you can head out on your own outdoor adventure! Great class for beginners/intermediate. Topics to learn: backpacking essentials, camping items to choose and use, fire building, cooking, etiquettes, pitching and striking camp, setting up a tent or hammock, and more! Hiking is moderate, about a mile one-way to backpacking campsite.
Class Date: October 6-8 (2-night Class)
Time: check in 9 AM on 6th; check out the morning of October 8th

 Guided Backpacking Trip: Overnight Survival Learn the basic survival skills needed to survival in the wilderness. Discover important skills related to survival to include shelter building, water pasteurization, core temperature control, rescue, medicinal and edible plants, and other skills you need to know to help you survive in the woods. Hiking is moderate, about a mile one-way to a backpacking campsite in DeSoto State Park.
Class Dates: September 15-16, 2018 & November 10-12, 2018 (2-night class)

 Plant Discovery Walk Led by Robert Wilson with Seven Pines Survival. This walk is designed around creating a materia medica, herbarium, and a plant press while learning about your local plants. Each walk will last around 3 hours and will focus on select plants. Participants will identify the plant, draw the plant, take a small sample to press, and use the senses to discover the properties of the plants.

 Native Plant Identification Walk This walk started in 2014 and is one of Seven Pines Survival most popular activities in DeSoto State Park. Join naturalist Robert Wilson for an experiential journey within the forest, taking in every opportunity to learn more about the natural world. Your guide will Identify many native plants of the southern Appalachians and teaching you how to recognize these plants.

 Bowdrill Class Survivalist Robert Wilson of Seven Pines Survival will teach you about the Bowdrill. Everything you will need to make your very first Bow Drill set will be provided, Including all the information you need to succeed. Not only will you learn how to make a Bow drill, but knife safety and how to properly use a knife as well.
