DeSoto State Park

DeSoto State Park and park partners like Little River Canyon National Preserve, Jacksonville State University Field School, One World Adventure Company, Little River Arts Council, Seven Pines Survival and more, team up to bring you many fun events throughout the year.

Campfire Talks, Classes, Demonstrations, Guided Interpretive or Fitness Hikes, Tours, Outdoor Adventures, Workshops......topics covering art, science, nature, and much more!

Most programs are free, or charge a small supply fee.

DeSoto State Park also adds community events such as classes, festivals, workshops, local craft shows, etc to our calendar so that we can help our guests and visitors make their visit to Lookout Mountain, Alabama even more memorable.

Campfire Talk: Herps Around Your Home

Join us for a fun campfire talk in the Great Outdoors! Campfire Talks are a series of educational & entertaining programs located in the great outdoors. Campfire programs are held many Friday & Saturday evening (May –October) in DeSoto State Park.

Amphibians and reptiles comprise about 17,000 species of vertebrates on this planet, and surprisingly, many species are ‘comfortable’ living with people. Come join JSU’s Dr. George Cline (aka Dr. Frog) and his friends as he presents this talk about these ‘friends’ that live among us. Seating is limited, so bring your own comfortable camp chair if you wish.

Date: Friday, July 13, 2018

Time: 8:00-9:00 p.m.

Where: DeSoto State Park-Fort Payne, Alabama. Campfire Ring in the Improved campground, next to campsite 93. Gate will open 30 minutes before program starts. (Held in nature center in case of inclement weather)

Fee: Free and open to everyone; Great for all ages!

Yoga on the Mountain

Hosted by One World Adventure Company & DeSoto State Park

Interested in starting your day in a positive way? Enjoy a yoga class in a beautiful place! These yoga classes are alignment based which makes the class perfect for those beginning their yoga practice or for those wanting to try something new.

Classes are open to residents and park visitors alike. No pre-registration required!

When: July 14, 2018 (Check website for other dates)

Time: 8:00-9:00 am

Where: DeSoto State Park, Fort Payne, Alabama. DeSoto Fall Picnic area, 7 miles from the main park area. Nature Center in case of rain.

Fee: 5.00 per participant per class. Bring mat/towel & water. Some mats and props available for use.

Yoga instructor Deidre has completed 200 hour yoga teacher training and is registered with Yoga Alliance.

Rappelling for Beginners

With One World Adventure

Explore scenic rock outcroppings near DeSoto Falls. No previous experience is necessary to go deeper into nature in this exciting activity! We have different skill levels from families to adventure seekers and everyone in between. Dress in light fitted clothing with hiking boots or tennis shoes. Long hair should be pulled back. Pack a reusable water bottle and snacks. Great for ages 12 to adult

Mountain Biking Excursion

With One World Adventure

Explore an easy, 3.5-mile loop trail-suitable for 1st-time mountain bikers(and other bikers too!)

Mountain bikes are a fun way to exercise and connect with nature. Compared to road bikes, they have bigger tires with rugged tread for stability and durability, a more upright cycling position, and some have suspension systems that absorb shock for a more comfortable ride. Mountain bikes & helmets are provided-wear closed-toed shoes and bring a day pack with water.

Healthy Families, Healthy Future-A program funded funded by the Stringfellow Health Institute and in partnership with the Community Foundation of NE Alabama.

Campfire Talk: Salamanders of Alabama

The Southeastern United States is one of the biodiversity ‘hotspots’ in the world. This includes an incredible diversity of salamanders that call Alabama their home. Come join Dr. George Cline (Jacksonville State University) as he introduces us to the world of slippery, slimy salamanders. Seating is limited, so bring your own comfortable camp chair if you wish.

Upcoming Events

Camping 101

DeSoto State Park-Fort Payne, Alabama

Have you ever wanted your children to experience the joys of camping, in a safe and fun environment? This camp-out would be perfect for those that want to experience the Great Outdoors!

Kids ages 7-9 will learn the basics of camping with One World Naturalist Robert Wilson of Seven Pines Survival. Participants explore the trails, learning native plants and trees and wildlife along the way. They will cook over an open fire and sleep under the stars in the primitive campsite in DeSoto State Park. Kids will come away with knowledge to pitch a tent, hang a hammock, and start a campfire, learn Leave No Trace ethics and more.

Dates: July 16-17, 2018. Time: 8:00 on the 16th to 11:00am of the 17th

Native Plant Identification Walk

This walk started in 2014 and is one of Seven Pines Survival most popular activities in DeSoto State Park. Join naturalist Robert Wilson for an experiential journey within the forest, taking in every opportunity to learn more about the natural world. Your guide will Identify many native plants of the southern Appalachians and teaching you how to recognize these plants. Make sure bring a camera, pencil, and a note pad because in the next 2 hours we will journey though out DeSoto seeing what Lookout Mountain has to offer!

Alabama Forest Classroom

Hosted by DeSoto State Park

Led by Robert Wilson with Seven Pines Survival

If you are looking to get your child outside to play, and help them to learn about the outdoors this is what this classroom is all about. SPS wants to get them outside in both an instructive educational setting and in a self-educational setting, to learn about the outdoors. Giving them the chance to participate with nature and to explore, discover, and learn.

Alabama Forest Classroom will be done on the weekends to open the class up to school kids, park visitors, and homeschoolers. Starting in April 2018 SPS will be hosting several outdoor educational classes from plant education to nature awareness. Many topics available such as animal tracks, natural art, plant education, Native American games, survival skills, and more.
