DeSoto State Park

DeSoto State Park and park partners like Little River Canyon National Preserve, Jacksonville State University Field School, One World Adventure Company, Little River Arts Council, Seven Pines Survival and more, team up to bring you many fun events throughout the year.

Campfire Talks, Classes, Demonstrations, Guided Interpretive or Fitness Hikes, Tours, Outdoor Adventures, Workshops......topics covering art, science, nature, and much more!

Most programs are free, or charge a small supply fee.

DeSoto State Park also adds community events such as classes, festivals, workshops, local craft shows, etc to our calendar so that we can help our guests and visitors make their visit to Lookout Mountain, Alabama even more memorable.

Alabama State Park’s Great Outdoors Day

DeSoto State Park-Fort Payne, Alabama

Enjoy a fun filled day in the great outdoors!

Join Alabama State Parks staff, volunteers & guest speakers for this great event showcasing all the many ways that adventures can be had in the Great Outdoors! Come out to enjoy the park with demonstrations, live animal education programs, info tables……and much more!

Date: Saturday, June 2, 2018 Time: 10:00 a.m.-3:00 p.m.

Where: DeSoto State Park, Fort Payne, Alabama. Picnic Area across from DeSoto’s Country Store on DeKalb County Road 89

Fee: $2.00 per vehicle for parking. No entrance fee for event. Great for all ages!

Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration

Part of Alabama State Park’s Great Outdoors Day

Dutch ovens have been in use for hundreds of years; especially when our country was expanding and families were on the move. Unable to bring their large cook stoves with them, women learned how to cook entire meals from stews & soups to bread & desserts, in their Dutch ovens. Learn the basics about Dutch ovens, how to clean & care for your cookware, AND cook (& eat!) dinner & dessert at the same time! This is a demonstration, so the best part is when food is just coming off the fire!

Archery

Have you ever wanted to release your inner archer? Archery is the art, practice, and skill of shooting arrows with the use of a bow

Join Alabama Department of Wildlife and Freshwater Fishery’s Stuart Goldsby for an opportunity to learn archery safety & techniques. This is a great opportunity to brush-up on the basics or start from scratch with the guidance of certified instructors. Ages 10 and up. All Equipment is provided.

Birds of Prey Program with Alabama Wildlife Center

Join Scottie & Lauren from the Alabama Wildlife Center, for a showcase of various birds of prey; they will present each bird’s unique abilities, adaptations, predator/prey relationships, specific characteristics, natural histories, and the personal histories of each bird.

Tree Army: The CCC Project

1:00 pm AND 6:00 pm performances

TREE ARMY: The CCC Project is a new play that will reacquaint audiences to the story of the Civilian Conservation Corps, what the program accomplished in a short time and how it had a positive effect on the country as a whole. Through researching the lives of the men and women (who they were, why they joined, what they did, where they worked, how they lived and what they left behind), the play investigates and imagines what members of the Corps gained from the experience, what happened when they returned home, and how their legacy resonates with a contemporary America. TREE ARMY is performed out of doors in our CCC created state park!

June 2nd-Yoga on the Mountain

Hosted by One World Adventure Company & DeSoto State Park

Interested in starting your day in a positive way? Enjoy a yoga class in a beautiful place! These yoga classes are alignment based which makes the class perfect for those beginning their yoga practice or for those wanting to try something new. Classes are open to residents and park visitors alike. No pre-registration required!

June 2nd-Mountain Biking Excursion

Explore an easy, 3.5-mile loop trail-suitable for 1st-time mountain bikers(and other bikers too!)

Mountain bikes are a fun way to exercise and connect with nature. Compared to road bikes, they have bigger tires with rugged tread for stability and durability, a more upright cycling position, and some have suspension systems that absorb shock for a more comfortable ride. Mountain bikes & helmets are provided-wear closed-toed shoes and bring a day pack with water.

June 2nd-Rappelling for Beginners

Explore scenic rock outcroppings near DeSoto Falls. No previous experience is necessary to go deeper into nature in this exciting activity! We have different skill levels from families to adventure seekers and everyone in between. Dress in light fitted clothing with hiking boots or tennis shoes. Long hair should be pulled back.

Pack a reusable water bottle and snacks. Great for ages 12 to adult

Paddle Little River

Boat Shack will be open to welcome you! Rent sit-on-top kayaks and canoes to enjoy a peaceful flatwater paddle on Little River overlooking beautiful DeSoto Falls! Can paddle around 4 miles round trip. Perfect for individuals or groups. Life vests & paddles are provided. Dates: June 1st-June 4th

Boat Shack Hours: Friday-Monday 7:00am-7:00pm with a launch every 3 hours.

Location: DeSoto State Park-Fort Payne, Alabama. DeSoto Falls Picnic Area, 7 miles from the main park area of DeSoto State Park.

DeSoto's pool is now open 7 days a week, 11:00 am to 6:00 pm daily

$4.00 per swimmer, Complementary Access for Lodge & Improved Campground Guests
