Gun Deer Season Opens November 18

Gun deer season is almost here! Remember to report all deer harvests through Alabama’s Game Check system. Hunters will have 48 hours to report their harvest through the OA mobile app or online at www.outdooralabama.com.

Know the law, follow guidelines

Many of Alabama’s deer hunters have already spent time this season in pursuit of game in other states. Those hunters are reminded that Alabama law prohibits the importation of deer carcasses and certain deer parts from other states and Canadian provinces where Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) has been confirmed. Violation of Alabama’s animal parts ban is a class C misdemeanor, carries significant fines and possible imprisonment, and poses a significant threat to Alabama’s native deer.

Prior to returning to Alabama with a deer (or other cervid) harvested in a CWD-affected state, it is critical that hunters completely debone all meat of the animal, remove and dispose of any brain or spinal tissue from skull plates, raw capes and hides. Root structures and other soft tissue should be removed from all teeth. Finished taxidermy products and tanned hides are not affected by the ban. 

CWD has been found in captive and/or wild deer in 24 states, two Canadian provinces, Norway, and South Korea. It is not known to be transmissible to humans or domestic livestock.

Adult Mentored Hunting Program Alabama's Adult Mentored Hunt Program is designed to provide a new hunter or a hunter with limited experience a one-on-one hunt under the guidance of a veteran mentor. Registration Open for Trapping Workshops

Registration is now open for trapping workshops administered by the ADCNR. Workshops are scheduled for both youth and adults, and are offered as a cooperative project between ADCNR, the Alabama Trappers and Predator Control Association, USDA Wildlife Services and Safari Club International.

2017 Wildlife Officer of the Year The Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies has named Brad Hasamear the 2017 Colonel Bob Brantley Wildlife Officer of the Year. Hasamear is a Senior Conservation Officer for ADCNR in Lawrence County. More

Wind Creek Archery Park Now Open

Alabama’s thirteenth community archery park held its grand opening on Friday, November 3, at Wind Creek State Park near Alexander City, Ala. The Wind Creek Community Archery Park is located on Alabama Highway 128 near the park’s office. The archery park will be open year-round during normal park hours for recreational shooting, competitive tournaments and outdoor educational programming. The facility features a seven-target adult range from 20 to 50 yards and a three-target youth range of 5 to 15 yards.

Public Land Hunting Opportunities

The Wildlife Section of the Alabama Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division operates and maintains 35 Wildlife Management Areas (WMA) across Alabama comprising 721,000 acres. These WMAs range in size from 400 acres (Martin CHA) to 91,263 acres (Black Warrior WMA).

How-to: Harvest Reporting With Your Smartphone

Game Check is a program designed to track deer and turkey harvest information on a county-by-county basis. Game Check requires that all hunters, regardless of age or license requirements, report deer and turkey harvests within 48 hours of the harvest.
