DeSoto State Park

DeSoto State Park and park partners like Little River Canyon National Preserve, Jacksonville State University Field School, One World Adventure Company, Georgia-Alabama Land Trust, Russell Cave National Monument, Seven Pines Survival and more, team up to bring you many fun events throughout the year.

Campfire Talks, Classes, Demonstrations, Guided Interpretive or Fitness Hikes, Tours, Outdoor Adventures, Workshops......topics covering art, science, nature, and much more!

DeSoto State Park also adds community events such as classes, festivals, workshops, local craft shows, etc to our calendar so that we can help our guests and visitors make their visit to Lookout Mountain, Alabama even more memorable.

May 26th-Forest Discovery Walk

This walk started in 2014 and is one of One World Adventure’s most popular activities in DeSoto State Park. Join naturalist Robert Wilson for an experiential journey within the forest, taking in every opportunity to learn more about the natural world. Your guide will point out the many native plants of the southern Appalachians, and teaching facts about important uses of particular plants for food, medicine, and craft.

May 26th-Star Party

Hosted by JSU’s Little River Canyon Center

NASA Educator John Weis is back for a star party night! We will be discussing common local constellations seen this time of year and then heading outside with the telescopes to see what is on the big screen. Join us for this family friendly free event.

May 27th-Yoga on the Mountain

Interested in starting your day in a positive way? Enjoy a yoga class in a beautiful place! These yoga classes are alignment based which makes the class perfect for those beginning their yoga practice or for those wanting to try something new. Classes are open to local residents and park visitors alike.

May 27th-‘Unfinished Bridges” History Hike (Hike #5)

Join the staff from the JSU Field School, DeSoto State Park, and the National Park Service for this exciting hike in our 2017 hiking series. This hike will feature 2 of the ‘Unfinished bridges’ and old culverts/road beds that the men of the Civilian Conservation Corps left unfinished in the early 1940s while developing DeSoto State Park.

May 27th-Glass Paperweight Class

Orbix Hot Glass is a glass blowing studio and gallery on Lookout Mountain that offers fine decorative and functional glass, as well as very popular glass blowing classes. This class is designed for those who really just want see what molten glass is all about - feel the heat, gather from the furnace, sculpt the glass into you own design.

May 26th- Amphibian Metamorphosis: From Egg to Frog, What a Leap!

Enjoy a fun trivia game with Jacksonville State University’s Dr. James Rayburn while exploring how amphibians transform from a single cell to the wonderful hopping creatures we all know. Meet live tadpoles…and perhaps adopt your own non-native tadpole pet!

May 27th- Poisonous & Venomous Organisms

Enjoy a fun trivia game presented by Jacksonville State University Toxicologist Dr. James Rayburn. Learn about how some plants & animals really get your attention with their special lines of defense. Beware out there!

May 27th-Rappelling Adventure

Explore scenic rock outcroppings along Lookout Mountain-Alabama! No previous experience is necessary to go deeper into nature in this exciting activity! We have different skill levels from families to adventure seekers and everyone in between. Dress in light fitted clothing with hiking boots or tennis shoes. Long hair should be pulled back. Pack a reusable water bottle and snacks.

May 28th-Rappelling Adventure

Explore scenic rock outcroppings along Lookout Mountain-Alabama! No previous experience is necessary to go deeper into nature in this exciting activity! .

Enjoy a day paddling on Little River! Bring your own, or rent a boat from One World Adventure this weekend. The Boat Shack will be open at DeSoto Falls Friday, Saturday, & Sunday.

DeSoto's Swimming Pool Opens this weekend, starting Saturday May 27th!! 11-6 pm.
