Attorney General Steve Marshall Announces Court of Criminal Appeals Upholds Reckless Manslaughter Conviction in Mobile County
(Montgomery)—Attorney General Steve Marshall announced the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals affirmed the conviction of Lewis Donterrio Wright, 35, of Prichard, Alabama, for reckless manslaughter. Wright was convicted in the Mobile County Circuit Court on May 18, 2022.
The evidence at trial showed that Wright shot and killed his cousin, Quinterius Casher, during a barbecue at a friend’s house. Witnesses testified that initially Wright and the victim were joking around, and then it turned into a serious argument. At some point, the victim got a gun from his car and sat it on the trunk. Soon thereafter, the argument became heated again, and Wright retrieved the victim’s gun and shot and killed the victim in front of numerous witnesses.
Mobile County District Attorney Keith Blackwood’s office successfully prosecuted this case and obtained a guilty verdict. Wright was sentenced to fifteen years’ imprisonment for his conviction. Wright sought to have his conviction reversed on appeal.
The Attorney General's Criminal Appeals Division handled the case during the appeals process, arguing for the Alabama Court of Criminal Appeals to affirm Wright’s conviction. The Court did so in a decision issued Friday, February 2, 2024.
