IRS and SSA Information and Education Available Online

Woman at Computer

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Social Security Administration (SSA) both provide information and training for governmental employers on their websites.

The IRS has agents that work with federal, state, and local governmental employers (FSLG) exclusively. FSLG presents information on federal tax matters for all types of government entities.

Visit the FSLG News web page to subscribe. Sign up to receive information pertaining to:

  • Calendar of outreach events (conferences, seminars, etc.)
  • Compensation and fringe benefit issues
  • Information return reporting
  • News and reminders from the Social Security Administration
  • Activities of the National Conference of State Social Security Administrators
  • Recent tax law changes

The SSA has a similar office for state and local government employers (SLGE). Visit the SLGE web page for SSA information, publications, FAQs and more!

Employer On-Behalf Funding

Fiscal Year 2017

The Division of Retirement and Benefits will apply Fiscal Year 2017 PERS and TRS employer on-behalf funding, provided by House Bill (HB) 256 (Section 28), to payrolls received in our office by July 15, 2017. Fiscal Year 2017 covers payrolls containing payroll end dates from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2017.

After the July 15, 2017, cutoff has been reached and all applicable payrolls have been processed, the Division will complete the annual on-behalf funding true-up. We anticipate sending employer on-behalf year-end statements that include the true-up by mid-August 2017 via email.

Statewide Deferred Compensation (457) Plan Rollout Status

Due to issues regarding the completion of the new Employer Services reporting tool until late September and the need to provide adequate time for employers to test and convert to the new reporting system, the rollout of the Alaska Public Employees’ Deferred Compensation Plan to political subdivisions, public organizations and school districts has been moved to January 1, 2018. The Division will, however, begin contacting employers through Division representatives and our recordkeeping partner, Empower Retirement Services, about the provisions of the plan in preparation for joining the plan.
