Alaska has free and affordable resources
to help. 

 

December 17, 2024 —The new year can be your time to make healthy changes that pay off for years to come.

Setting a New Year’s resolution and planning for it can increase your chances of success. Use this month to focus on your health goals.

  • What’s your why? Make a list of reasons you want to make a change.
  • Take steps to get ready. Prepare for possible challenges and pull together family, friends and other supports to help you meet your goals.

And when you’re ready, we’re ready. Alaska has resources to help.

 

Do you want to meet one or more of these health goals in 2025? Keep reading to learn about free and affordable Alaska programs that can help you achieve your New Year’s health resolutions.

Quit tobacco and vaping

 

Alaska’s Tobacco Quit Line: Create your personalized quit plan. This includes free quit coaching over the phone or online, free nicotine replacement therapy, and more. Last year, over 1,800 Alaskans enrolled in the Quit Line to receive support to quit tobacco.

Move more


You can move more on your own, with friends and family, or with help from Alaska programs.

Join in-person programs to move more, eat better, and achieve a healthy weight


Want an affordable program that meets in person to help you move more, eat better or achieve a healthy weight? Alaska has in-person programs in select communities that help you make all those changes AND prevent or manage diabetes. These in-person programs include regular meetings and match participants with a coach and other Alaskans working toward the same health goals. In 2024, about 900 Alaskans joined these programs to meet their health goals.

Join an in-person program to lower or manage blood pressure

 

Yearly, over 1,000 Alaskans join affordable in-person programs to manage their blood pressure. These programs include regular meetings and match participants with a coach and other Alaskans working toward the same health goal.

During the past two years, almost 3,350 Alaskans joined free, online Fresh Start programs to lose weight or achieve a healthy weight, prevent or manage diabetes, or manage their blood pressure.

Like in-person programs, Fresh Start programs match participants with a coach and other adults working toward the same health goals. Fresh Start programs help Alaskans move more, eat and sleep better, reduce stress, and achieve a healthy weight while they prevent or manage diabetes and blood pressure. Participants receive free tools to help, like a body weight scale, blood sugar monitor or blood pressure cuff.
