The Danya Institute in Maryland hosts the March 17th training over Zoom. Topics include responding to misconceptions about substance use disorder, such as waiting for “rock bottom” and “teens are going to drink anyway, so they might as well do it at home”. The webinar will also discuss evidence-based strategies that can help prevent stigma, such as increased addiction literacy.

The Great Lakes Prevention Technology Transfer Center Network hosts the March 30 and April 6 trainings which will ground participants in research on the impacts of stigma and the evidence for preventing and reducing it. Participants can expect opportunities for discussion, self-examination, and real-world application of prevention practices.

Help Identifying Individuals Overlooked for Alcohol Use Disorder
Researchers at The University of New Mexico (UNM) and University of Missouri (MU) have developed a new framework of 13 risk factors that could lead to someone developing an AUD. These include impulsive behavior, reward sensitivity and punishment sensitivity. This is the first AUD-specific mechanistic framework that synthesizes research on its behavioral, neurobiological, and genetic features. The goal of the framework is early detection and personalized care.

Addiction Medicine Consults in Hospital Reduce Deaths in Patients with Substance Use Disorder
In-hospital addiction medicine consultations can reduce deaths in high-risk patients with substance use disorder, according to a new study published in the Journal of General Internal Medicine by University of Pittsburgh physicians. This research is among the first of its kind to show these consults are a life-saving intervention.

Alcohol Use Among Girls and Young Women: A Worrying Trend
This fact sheet from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration provides trend data and health risks of alcohol use among girls and young women. It also provides some links for how to educate young people and adults about the risks of alcohol use.

The Kenai Peninsula Reentry Coalition and Department of Corrections offers community members an opportunity to gain an understanding of the obstacles facing people releasing from incarceration, navigating systems, making appointments, managing paperwork, etc. There are two ways to participate: 1) as a reentrant participating in the simulation; 2) as an agency staffing a table at the simulation.

Offering Buprenorphine Medication to People with Opioid Use Disorder in Jail May Reduce Rearrests and Reconviction
This study at two jails in Massachusetts revealed a 32% reduction in rates of probation violations, reincarcerations, or court charges when the facility offered buprenorphine to people in jail compared to when it did not. The findings were published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence.

Justice Counts - Actionable Data to Bolster Public Safety
The University of Cincinnati Corrections Institute (UCCI) is partnering with the Council on State Governments (CSG) Justice Center to provide this new resource which scans criminal justice data in all 50 states to provide policymakers with timely information about criminal justice systems, existing gaps in data collection, and opportunities for improvement, etc.

FASD Profiles of Neurodevelopmental Impairment Across the Lifespan: Effectiveness of Intervention Recommendations March 30, 7:30-8:30am AKDT
This training is presented by Susan (Astley) Hemingway PhD, director of the Washington State Fetal Alcohol Syndrome Diagnostic and Prevention Network. It will feature information on what types of neurobehavioral impairments are most often observed in individuals with FASD, what interventions are typically recommended, and identifying whether interventions meet caregiver’s needs.

Request for Proposals: Substance Use Disorder Preventative Services & Medication-Assisted Treatment Program Development

The State of Alaska, Department of Corrections is soliciting proposals on how to further develop a system-wide medication-assisted treatment (MAT) program. The request is also seeking guidance on implementing harm reduction and early intervention programs for individuals not appropriate for intensive SUD programs but potentially at risk to develop problems due to their substance use.

Mental Health and/or Substance Use Disorder "Safety Net" Provider Agreement
The Alaska Division of Behavioral Health has posted a Provider Agreement seeking services for individuals with a primary mental health or substance use disorder diagnosis who are uninsured and do not meet Medicaid income or eligibility criteria. Services requested include: mobile outreach crisis response, peer-based crisis services, 23-hour crisis observation, and crisis residential and stabilization services.
