March 21, 2022 — Parents and other caring adults can help teens get information about vaping and preventing addiction. The resources shared below are free and available online, through short videos, and social media.
Despite risks, many Alaska teens continue to vape.
In 2019, about 1 in 4 (26.1%) Alaska high schoolers reported smoking e-cigarettes, and almost 1 in 2 (45.8%) reported ever trying e-cigarettes. Many of these products, especially those with flavors and colorful packaging, can be appealing to teens.

There is growing evidence about the health harms of e-cigarettes, also known as e-cigs, vapes, and puff bars. Researchers have found many toxic chemicals and metals in e-cigarettes, including:
-
Addictive chemicals like nicotine, which harms brain development
-
Cancer-causing chemicals like acetaldehyde and formaldehyde
-
Lung disease-causing chemicals like diethylene glycol
-
Volatile organic compounds like benzene
-
Heavy metals like nickel, tin, and lead
We also know that young people who smoke e-cigarettes have higher chances of smoking traditional cigarettes in the future.
