Section 1115 Waiver Update e-Memo - Urgent – Need for National Provider Identifier (NPI)

Dear Provider:

The implementation date for the 1115 SUD services is fast approaching.    With this implementation, DBH will begin the process of individual renderer enrollment for all providers working with an 1115 SUD Waiver agency.    The process for enrollment of both Waiver agencies and then staff working with that agency will be rolled out at a later date.   To prepare for the 1115 waiver, all rendering providers must obtain a National Provider Identifier (NPI).

Please begin this process immediately by having all providers who do not have NPI numbers go to the National Plan & Provider Enumeration System (NPPES) website to create an account and request a NPI number.   Individuals can access the NPPES website at the following link: https://nppes.cms.hhs.gov/#/

Individuals who will need an NPI number include:

  • Current Chemical Dependency Counselors
  • Current Behavioral Health Clinical Associates
  • Current Peer Support Specialists
  • Clinical staff who currently do not have an NPI number

We appreciate the extra time and effort that it will take all of you as we work to implement the 1115 waiver, so thank you in advance for your efforts to prepare. We are looking forward to having the waiver fully implemented so that the new services are available for your clients.
