Sponsoring organizations and institutions are required by regulation to keep Bulletins, Instructions, and USDA Policy Memorandums for reference and to apply immediately the appropriate instruction to agency programs. Call Child Nutrition Programs if you need further clarification.
USDA Policy Memo 05-2024 Implementation Guidance: State Agency Review Requirements
This memorandum gives guidance on additional monitoring requirements (including the 2-year cycle reviews for institutions that conduct activities other than CACFP and institutions that are at risk of serious management problems or had reviews that detected serious management problems).
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) is still receiving comments on the Proposed Rule entitled "Serious Deficiency Process in the Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) and the Summer Food Service Program (SFSP)” in the Federal Register. These changes aim to improve consistency in the serious deficiency process within and across States and strengthen program integrity.

Written comments must be received on or before May 21, 2024 to be assured of consideration.

CNP Web Accounting Interface
We’re excited to announce the project for the interface between CNPWeb and our accounting system has been completed. This will streamline the claim approval process and decrease the turnaround time. When a payment is issued, sponsors will receive an automated email with a payment sheet attached. Unfortunately, the information currently provided on the sheet is vague. We’re working with the contractor on updating it so you can easily identify your payments. In the meantime, if you haven’t already done so, please register for Vendor Self Service (VSS) through the Department of Administration, which allows you to view your payments. If you have any questions, please contact our grants administrator Carole Baker at carole.baker@alaska.gov or 907-465-2860.
Congratulations, Petersburg School District!
Petersburg School District recently received the “Innovation in the Preparation of School Meals” award from the Healthy Meals Incentives Recognition Awards, jointly created by the USDA and Action for Healthy Kids as part of USDA’s Healthy Meals Incentives Initiative (HMI). These awards celebrate school districts who embrace opportunities to take their school meals to the next level.
The school district was recognized for their commitment to creating scratch and semi-scratch foods that incorporate local and culturally relevant ingredients like moose meat, carrots, herring eggs, and kale. “We recently had the Petersburg Indian Association come into the culinary classes to help the students prepare moose roasts and a moose stock gravy,” says Carlee Johnson McIntosh, food service director, Petersburg School District. “Then, we had a lunch taste testing of the moose roasts and moose gravy for our students.”

Highlight: Fairbanks Native Association's K’edenyahh Denh Garden
Fairbanks Native Association (FNA) Head Start 0-5 has reaped success with their community garden. The garden's purpose was to introduce the program families and staff to opportunity for outside learning.
Their K’edenyahh Denh garden was not only a fun family engagement activity, but also included all the components designed to allow classrooms to discover and explore how a garden is planned, managed, harvested, and prepared for at the end of the growing season.
K’edenyahh Denh in Denakk’e means "The Place Where Plants Grow."
Teachers and students recorded height, weight, size, color of plants, edible vs. non-edible plants, insect tracking, weather and temperature monitoring, footprint, or handprint sizes in the dirt, watering schedule, and pruning process. Students capture their experience through drawings, paintings, coloring, and using a glue stick to share their garden story.
FNA Head Start's Nutrition Team is working to build more nutritional activities for this coming year’s garden. They hope to incorporate AI/AN and other cultural menu items.
