On Saturday afternoon dozens of Juneau residents and tourists gathered under a sunny sky outside of the Alaska State, Library, Archives and Museum downtown to participate in a bear gut processing workshop.
For the around three-hour event, participants were invited to carefully scrape away bits of membrane and waste from a Kodiak brown bear’s small intestine, estimated to be around 70 feet long, under the guidance of Sven Haakanson Jr., a Sugpiaq anthropologist, curator and artist of the Old Harbor Alutiiq Tribe from Kodiak Island.
Museum of the North will use Bus 142 to tell Broader Story of Alaskan Lands
The Museum of the North in Fairbanks has received $500,000 to preserve the bus made famous in the book Into the Wild. The funding comes from the National Park Service and the Institute of Museum and Library Services and will help prepare the bus for public exhibit.
Angela Lin, senior collections manager at the museum, acknowledges that the bus can be polarizing in Alaska and says that the exhibit will address more than Into the Wild.
Wind chimes made out of sea glass, a chess set made out of table legs, and tiny knitted birds in Viking hats — these are just some of the art pieces now displayed at Petersburg’s Clausen Memorial Museum for the Little Norway Festival Art Show, which showcases artwork from community members.
The back room of the Clausen Memorial Museum was packed with paintings and lovingly-crafted objects to be shown to the hundreds of Little Norway festival-goers set to pack the streets of Petersburg. Cindi Lagoudakis, the museum’s director, painstakingly logged all of the pieces local artists handed over.

Community members gathered April 26 around the Loved and Lost Memorial Bench in front of the Homer Public Library to celebrate the installation of the etched glass and copper lotus lamp envisioned by Brad Hughes and created by Art Koeninger.
The ceremony, which honored the memory of Anesha “Duffy” Murnane who went missing on Oct. 17, 2019, as well as other missing and murdered people, began with the reading of a poem, “Holding the Light” by Stuart Kestenbaum, then continued with words shared by Murnane’s parents, friends and the artists, and ended with a blessing.

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) takes taxpayer appeals. If a taxpayer's dispute with the IRS qualifies for an appeal, the office will review the issues with a fresh, objective perspective and schedule a conference.
But many people, especially here in Alaska, don’t live near an appeals office. So the IRS Appeals Office is taking comments until July 10, 2023 on how it can further improve conference options for taxpayers and representatives who are not located near an Appeals office. Email comments to ap.taxpayer.experience@irs.gov.
