Teacher Retention and Recruitment:
Implementation Feedback Sought, Call for Subcommittee Volunteers
The State of Alaska is in the third phase of an effort to improve teacher retention and recruitment (TRR) in Alaska. The Governor’s Teacher Retention and Recruitment Working Group met throughout 2020 and early 2021, and last April released TRR Action Plan. Now, DEED is in the implementation phase.
The first implementation convening was held late February. A recording of that meeting is available here.
Educators are invited to share their thoughts on how to create a supportive system in this Google form.
The form also provides a way to indicate interest in volunteering for a TRR Implementation subcommittee. The committees are the Organizational Health Cadre, Recruitment Task Force, Alternative Certification Team, and Retirement Working Group.
Please complete the form by March 31, 2022.
State Board Provisionally Approves UAA Early Childhood Education Program
Wednesday the State Board of Education and Early Development provided provisional approval of the University of Alaska Anchorage (UAA) School of Education’s Early Childhood Education teacher preparation program and adopted regulation changes pertaining to teacher certification, assessment participation guidelines, and native languages. The Board also approved the final FY2023 School Construction and Major Maintenance Grant Fund lists, approved charter school renewals for five schools, and voted to open public comment periods for facilities publications, alternate assessment scores, and the seal of biliteracy.
HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS SOUGHT FOR NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE CAMP
Applications are now being accepted from current high school seniors in the class of 2022 to represent Alaska at the 2022 Virtual National Youth Science Camp (NYSCamp). Two students from each state, Washington, D.C, and select countries will attend the all-expenses-paid program which will be held virtually from June 27 through July 20, 2022.
Hosted in Monongahela National Forest in West Virginia since 1963, the NYSCamp has traditionally been a residential science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) program designed to honor and challenge some of the nation’s rising STEM leaders and provide them with opportunities to engage with STEM professionals and participate in exciting outdoor activities. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, however, the 2022 NYSCamp will be an entirely virtual experience which will include world-class lectures, directed studies, and seminars with prestigious and up and coming STEM professionals who are making a difference in their fields of study and changing the world for good. The camp will also provide significant opportunities for delegates to interact and engage with STEM professionals, camp staph (intentional misspelling to highlight their infections enthusiasm), and other delegates in exciting, fun, and meaningful ways. Even though delegates can’t gather in the beautiful mountains of West Virginia this year, the 2022 virtual NYSCamp will be an engaging, stimulating, and unforgettable educational experience!
The NYSCamp is offered to selected participants at NO COST so that talented students may attend regardless of their financial ability. Since selection to attend camp is a very competitive process with only two delegates guaranteed a spot from each state or nation, we expect NYSCamp delegates to regularly engage in camp activities for the duration of camp. At past virtual camps, most delegates spent an average of 4 hours per day engaged in camp activities. Some delegates may want or need to hold part time jobs, participate in part time internships, or take short trips with family or friends during the 3.5 weeks of camp. Within reason, the virtual NYSCamp experience is designed to allow delegates to work around these other commitments and still participate meaningfully at camp.
Additionally, because the camp is virtual, delegates will be able to tune in remotely from practically anywhere.
For more information about the program, please see http://www.nyscamp.org and http://press.nyscamp.org Applications must be submitted online at http://apply.nyscamp.org by 11:59 PM EST on March 31, 2022.
