AC Transit’s East Bay Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) will soon begin construction on Broadway in downtown Oakland! Four BRT station platforms will be built on Broadway, all of which will feature new lighting, real-time arrival displays, and artistic enhancements.
In order to complete construction of these stations as quickly as possible, regular northbound bus service will be temporarily detoured off Broadway and onto Franklin Street. While car and bike traffic will still be able to use Broadway, the bus stops on Broadway between 12th Street and Thomas L. Berkley Way (20th Street) will be temporarily closed. Southbound bus traffic will continue to use Broadway, but the stops between 12th and 14th streets in front of Oakland City Center will not be in service. This detour is currently scheduled to begin the week of September 9.
Lines 6, 12, 14, 18, 33, 51A, 72, 72M, 72R, 801, 802, 805, 840, 851, and the Broadway Shuttle will have stop changes. Northbound lines 6, 12, 18, 33, 51A, 72, 72M, 72R, and the Broadway Shuttle will serve new stops along Franklin Street between 12th and 16th streets. Most southbound lines will continue to serve the stop on Broadway at 17th Street and additional service will be added to the stop on Broadway at 12th Street. The All Nighters will be rerouted and a new transfer point will be established at the Uptown Transit Center on Thomas L. Berkley Way between Telegraph Avenue and Broadway. Due to construction in downtown Oakland unrelated to AC Transit, expect delays on all affected bus lines.
AC Transit is committed to providing you, our riders, with the information you need to continue to get you where you need to go. Before and during the detour, we will:
- Deploy ambassadors in downtown Oakland to help you find your bus stop or make your connection;
- Place signage that directs riders to the temporary bus stops on Franklin Street;
- Share service alerts that include the temporary bus stop locations on Franklin Street and which lines will serve them; and
- Provide frequent social media updates via @RideACT
About BRT
BRT is often called “light rail on wheels” because it brings the frequency, safety, and reliability of light rail to the bus rider. The service will run primarily along International Boulevard between 20th Street and Broadway in downtown Oakland to the San Leandro BART Station. BRT’s new fleet of five-door, hybrid-electric buses will offer train-like boarding along this 9.5-mile route, arriving every seven minutes during peak times.
