BRT Stations Are Underway!

Construction Beginning on International Boulevard
Between 71st and 73rd Avenues

What is BRT?

AC Transit is building the East Bay’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. Think of BRT as light-rail train on wheels. It will operate mostly inside a bus only lane between San Leandro BART and downtown Oakland. Station construction is beginning on International Boulevard between 71st and 73rd Avenues in Oakland.

Why is AC Transit building BRT?

BRT is a multi-million-dollar investment in our community. BRT will make trips faster, on an entirely new curb-to-curb roadway surface. A series of center median and curbside stations will be framed with innovative lighting, landscaping, security cameras, and corridor wide Wi-Fi access to name a few. Thousands of riders will soon experience improved transit to jobs, shopping, healthcare services, schools, and much more.

How long will BRT be under construction?

BRT broke ground in January 2017 and construction is expected to be completed in mid-2019. To eliminate disruptions, construction is taking place in stages, along the 9.5-mile International Boulevard/East 14th Street corridor.

What can the public expect while station construction is underway?

Safety is AC Transit’s foremost priority. So, you will soon see our construction crews install concrete barriers in the center of the road. The barriers are needed to protect workers as they build BRT’s train-like center median stations. It is important to note the barriers will remain in place throughout construction. Crosswalks will remain accessible; although there will be times when crosswalks will be temporarily closed or relocated.

Will International Boulevard be closed for the construction?

No. A travel lane in each direction will remain open at all times.

Will construction mean changes to turns?

We have been careful to minimize disruptions as you travel the corridor. But building the East Bay’s most efficient transit system, will mean reducing and, in some cases, eliminating left turns on International Boulevard. Some left and U-turn’s will be eliminated only during construction and some changes will be permanent. Nevertheless, you will always have access to your business or home.

As we make way for progress, AC Transit encourages businesses and residents alike to allow extra travel time in construction zones.
