After years of planning, BRT construction has officially
started along International Blvd between 82nd and 94th
Avenues. Construction of the East Bay Bus Rapid Transit Project (BRT)
is officially underway!
BRT is often called “light rail on wheels” because it brings
the frequency, safety and reliability of light rail to the bus rider. BRT will
run a 9.5-mile corridor between downtown Oakland and San Leandro BART, mostly
along International Blvd in Oakland and E. 14th Street in San
Leandro.
Bus Rapid Transit brings the best of transit experiences
from around the globe and will revolutionize public transit in the East
Bay. This $178 million investment in our community improves regional
connectivity and will relieve traffic congestion while enhancing one of the
East Bay’s most diverse cultural corridors.
BRT construction may involve paving, traffic signals, tree
removals, sidewalks, curb ramps, and construction of BRT stations.
In an effort to minimize disruptions to the community,
underground sewer and utility services were previously relocated. New
construction along the corridor will happen over six separately timed
stages.
