Bridging Trade Finance Gaps: State-Led Innovation to Bolster Exporting by Small and Medium-Sized Firms By: Brookings-Rockefeller
Fostering increased levels of exports continues to be an important component of states’ economic development strategies. Exports helped bring the United States out of the Great Recession, with particularly rapid growth in certain states and metropolitan areas.
This new report, Bridging Trade Finance Gaps: State-Led Innovations to Bolster Exports by Small and Medium-Sized Firms”—offers three complementary approaches that states can adopt in their efforts to address the SME export financing shortfall. First, states can work to raise awareness among SMEs and financial institutions about existing federal and private instruments and sources of export financing. Second, states can offer additional financial instruments to help reduce SMEs’ barriers to exporting. And third, states can set up new finance entities that provide direct export finance support exclusively targeted to SMEs.

Announcing the first Face of Manufacturing in Georgia
In November, the Georgia Manufacturing Extension Partnership (GaMEP) at Georgia Tech announced a program to honor the hard-working, dedicated people throughout the state who work within or are affected by manufacturing companies. Today, they are proud to reveal the first Face of Manufacturing. She was taught to believe from a young age that if you work hard, you can do anything. From a welder on third shift to managing the human resources department for a company of 1,600, she has built a career in manufacturing. Rhonda Beasley of Roper Corporation is the first Face of Manufacturing in Georgia. Click here for her story and a link to her video. If you have questions about the campaign or would like to provide feedback, please email Katie Takacs, GaMEP marketing manager, at katie.takacs@innovate.gatech.edu or Karen Fite, GaMEP director, at karen.fite@innovate.gatech.edu.
