In less than three days, Metro Louisville residents can enjoy the only fireworks show on the Ohio River celebrating Independence Day. The Third Annual Riverview Park Independence Festival, presented by Brown-Forman and Louisville Gas and Electric Company, kicks off this Saturday, June 28, and includes music, food, and family activities to celebrate America’s founding.

The event is free to the public. Festivities begin at 3 p.m. and end with fireworks on the River at 10 p.m.  Joining Blackwell as Metro Council sponsors are Cindi Fowler (D-14), Vicki Aubrey Welch (D-13), Marianne Butler (D-15) and David Yates (D-25).

Among the highlights of this year’s Festival:

  • Events emceed by Southwest Louisville’s own Dawne Gee
  • Performances by 31W and Ode 2 the Gnu
  • Kids’ activities include appearances by Squallis Puppeteers, fun experiments provided by Mad Science of Kentucky, and the wonderful Riverview Splash Park
  • Hot air balloon rides offered in the Kosair Children’s Hospital balloon
  • Ron’s Hot Dogs, Ehrler’s Ice Cream, and other delicious “fair” fare
  • The Pyrotechnic Display Inc.’s team is set to deliver an even bigger fireworks show than the one that dazzled the crowd last year. The show will be lit from a barge on the Ohio River creating a colorful reflection on the water.

Limited parking is available at Riverview Park. Additional parking will be available at PRP High School, located at 5901 Greenwood Road. TARC will be providing a trolley shuttle service for attendees 4:00pm until 10:45 p.m.

Brown-Forman and LG&E are the Presenting Sponsors of this year’s Independence Festival. Café Press, WAVE 3 News, Norton Healthcare, Atlas Machine & Supply, The Corradino Group and Metro PCS have contributed as Lead Sponsors. Leanhart Plumbing, Inc. is on board as a Proud Patron, and the festival owes a special thanks to Fort Knox Federal Credit Union.
