Prepare for flooding this winter

Winter weather can increase the risk of flooding across Somerset.
Planning ahead can help you prepare and know what to do if flooding affects your home or local area.
Visit our Flooding information and advice page for guidance on what to do before, during and after a flood.
Somerset Prepared’s Flooding page also offers practical advice.
Here are 4 ways to prepare this winter:
- Know your risk: check the long-term flood risk for your area and remember that you do not need to live beside a river to be affected.
- Stay informed: check current flood alerts and warnings, and sign up for free Environment Agency warnings where available.
- Make a simple plan: know how to move people, pets, vehicles and important items to safety; keep key contacts and insurance details accessible; and prepare essential items.
- Act safely: follow official advice, never enter floodwater or drive through a flooded road, and call 999 if there’s an immediate danger to life.
