Stay warm and well this winter

Person wrapped in a checked blanket holds a mug beside a frosted window on a cold day.

Visit the Government’s Keeping warm and well page for advice on staying well in cold weather, including flu vaccinations and financial support.

You can also sign up for weather-health email alerts from the UK Health Security Agency.

Warm Welcome Somerset

Hosted in community venues such as village halls, community centres and places of worship, Warm Welcome spaces provide somewhere for people to socialise, enjoy a hot drink and take part in activities.

All Somerset Council libraries are Warm Welcome spaces, offering somewhere to stay warm and use library facilities. Many also offer free activities for children during school holidays.

Winter coat exchange

Need a warm coat this winter? Our libraries’ winter coat exchange is now open, with coats available to pick up at participating libraries.

The annual exchange helps make tight budgets go a little further. Here’s how it works:

  • You don’t need to bring a coat to take one home
  • If you have a spare coat, you can donate it without taking one
  • Donated coats must be clean and in good condition
  • The scheme accepts adult and children’s coats of any shape or size

To donate a coat, please check its pockets and hand it to a member of staff at a participating library. The exchange cannot accept gloves, scarves, hats or other winter accessories.
