Somerset residents recycle more food waste

Onion peelings food waste

Well done to our residents, together we recycled 7.3% more food waste between July 2025 and July 2026 following a year-long campaign.

With more being recycled, the increase is equal to every household recycling an extra half a kitchen caddy every month.

As well as a bumper year for food waste recycling, more than 1,000 residents also pledged to recycle food waste or do a little more. Sharing their top tips to reduce their food waste and sharing tips to make recycling simple.

The winners of the food waste pledge prize-draw were: Jackie from Chard, Jonathan from Taunton, Sheila from East Chinnock, Karen from Montacute and Katherine from Chard.

All cooked and uncooked food waste can be added to the weekly collection, including food that is out of date or past its best. All food waste collected is recycled in Somerset and is used to produce clean, green energy and fertiliser.
