By taking part in the Big Butterfly Count, you can help build a picture of how butterflies and day-flying moths are faring across the UK.

The Great British Butterfly Count (officially known as the Big Butterfly Count) runs from Friday, 17 July to Sunday, 9 August 2026. Simply spend 15 minutes in a sunny spot outdoors, record the butterflies you see, and submit your sightings to help monitor local environmental health.

You can take part by following these quick steps:

  • Download your guide: Grab a free butterfly ID chart or use the spotter sheet from the Butterfly Conservation
  • Record your sightings: Use the free iOS and Android app downloadable from their website to track the species and numbers of butterflies and day-flying moths you spot in your 15-minute window.
  • Submit your data: Add your counts to the Big Butterfly Count Interactive Map to see how your local observations contribute to national conservation science.
