Somerset employers urged to support the next generation of talent

Somerset’s businesses play a vital role in creating opportunities for young people, helping them build the skills, confidence and experience they need to take their first steps into work and develop successful careers.

Councillor David Woan, our Associate Lead Member for Business Strategy, is encouraging employers across the county to consider how they can support the next generation of Somerset’s workforce, whether through recruitment, training, mentoring or recognition.

One opportunity now available to employers is the DWP’s Youth Jobs Grant, part of the wider Youth Guarantee. The scheme offers financial support to employers who recruit eligible young people aged 18 to 24 who have been on Universal Credit and out of work for at least 6 months. Eligible employers may receive up to £3,000 per job, subject to the scheme conditions.

The grant is designed to help businesses recruit and train young people, while giving those young people meaningful paid work opportunities that can support them towards sustained employment.

Businesses can also help celebrate the young people already making a difference in Somerset by taking part in Somerset Chamber of Commerce’s Somerset Future 30. The new awards programme will recognise 30 outstanding young professionals aged under 30 who are making an impact in business, innovation or their community.

Employers are encouraged to nominate rising stars in their teams, while eligible individuals can also put themselves forward. Nominations are free and must be submitted online by 14 August.

“Somerset’s future economy depends on the people, skills and ambition we nurture today. Our businesses have a crucial part to play in opening doors for young people, helping them gain valuable experience and recognising the talent already making a difference across the county.

“The Youth Jobs Grant gives employers a practical way to create opportunities for young people who are looking to move into work, while Somerset Future 30 is a chance to celebrate the emerging leaders and innovators helping to shape Somerset’s future.

“I would encourage businesses of all sizes to look at how they can get involved, whether by recruiting, nominating a young person, or thinking about the wider role they can play in supporting skills and opportunity in Somerset.”
