Great Big Green Week 2026

Great Big Green Week is a chance to celebrate the small changes that can add up to something bigger.
From 6 to 14 June 2026, communities across the country will be coming together to take action for nature, climate and the places they live – and Somerset is no exception.
For Somerset, that means thinking about the everyday choices that help create a cleaner, greener future. Wasting less, repairing more, reusing what we can and recycling all support Somerset Council’s wider priorities around sustainability and protecting our environment.
This Great Big Green Week, why not start with one simple change?
-
Refill instead of buying new.
A simple step is to take a water bottle or coffee cup with you – and refill while on-the-go. Or perhaps try out a refill shop and reuse the bottles and jars you already have to top up on household items, like washing up liquid, soap or even some food items. Across Somerset’s towns and villages there are many refill shops, why not see if there is one near you, many have been tagged in this Facebook post by our followers.
-
Pass on something you no longer need.
Take a fresh look at what you throw away. Small steps really can make a big difference, if you no longer need an item, you may find that someone else could make use of it! Check out our Pass it on page for ideas and a list of local places, including toy libraries, doorstep collections, furniture groups and scrap stores.

Fix instead of throw.
We’re lucky to have a thriving community of volunteer repairer’s across the county. Many able to fix a wide variety of things, from clothing repairs, to electricals like mending a vacuum cleaner, or mechanical like fixing bikes, and household items. Check out the list of local repair groups via our website, but check locally with each group if they have someone who can repair your item.
