TOEFL has updated their iBT Score Scale

Beginning January 21, 2026, the Test of English as a Foreign Language, Internet-Based Test
(TOEFL iBT) scores will be reported on a new 1–6 proficiency scale.

What is changing?

Under the current model, TOEFL iBT scores are reported as:

• Four section scores (Reading, Listening, Speaking, Writing), each ranging from 0–30
• A total score calculated as the sum of those sections (0–120)

Beginning in 2026:

• Each section will be scored on a 1–6 scale, reported in 0.5-point increments
• The overall score will be calculated as the average of the four section scores,
  rounded to the nearest half-point
• The traditional 0–120 total score will continue to be reported through 2027 to
  support institutional transition

This revised scale is intended to provide clearer alignment with the Common European
Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) and to improve interpretability across
international contexts.

Why this matters

This update does not change the underlying TOEFL assessment itself - it changes how
proficiency is displayed and interpreted. Organizations that reference specific TOEFL
thresholds should be aware of how their stated minimums correspond to the new 1–6
scale. For guidance, the Educational Testing Service (ETS) has linked common 0–120
benchmarks (for example, 80, 90, 100) to the new proficiency bands to assist institutions
during the transition period.
