Food Waste Action Week is coming - 9 to 15 March

Food waste action week 2026

Did you know that most food waste happens at home, not in shops or restaurants?

From 9 to 15 March, Food Waste Action Week returns, and it’s a great chance for us all to save money and cut waste by making the most of the food we buy.

Food Waste Action Week is a national campaign led by Love Food Hate Waste, focusing on simple, practical steps we can all take. This year’s message is about using what we buy, from planning meals and storing food properly to making the most of leftovers.

Wasting less food means:

  • saving you time and money when doing your food shopping
  • reducing the amount of rubbish in your bin
  • cutting climate‑changing emissions

We’ll be sharing local tips, ideas and support during the week to help you waste less food at home. Keep an eye out on our website and social media channels, during the week.

Looking for ways to reduce food waste?

Look for a local community fridge. These community initiatives are popping up across the country, with several open to the public in Somerset. At a community fridge, you can pick up surplus food that would have gone to waste at local food shops. It’s still good to eat and usually free.

A list of community fridges can be found online.
