A tenant's story: Jim's journey

Tenant Jim standing outside his new home with housing and support staff, marking a positive new chapter after moving into sheltered accommodation.

When Jim Manderson lost his beloved wife, June, in July 2024, his world changed overnight.

The couple had shared a large 3-bedroom home for decades, but now Jim was alone and struggling. On top of his grief, Jim faced the challenge of living in a house filled with 40 years of belongings. 2 bedrooms were so packed he couldn’t even open the doors.

In February last year, Jim reached out for help. That call marked the beginning of an incredible journey.

Step by step support

First, we updated the tenancy so it was in Jim’s name only. Then, we helped him apply to Homefinder Somerset.

Because he was downsizing, Jim was awarded a Gold band, giving him priority for a smaller, more manageable home. But this wasn’t just about moving, it was about supporting Jim as he re-built his life.

We referred him to Bridging the Gap, a branch of Mind, where he met Tanya Godley-Kelly.

Tanya supported Jim through his grief, connected him with local groups, and gave him the confidence to take the next steps.

She made the initial call to an auction house and attended while Jim instructed them to assess and clear what they wanted. This was a turning point; Jim began to reclaim his home and his life.

Jim’s generosity shone through. He donated items to children’s charities, Mind art workshops, school art groups, and charity shops. Through Village Agents, Jim also gifted wheelchairs, a walker, and a portable table to help others in need. A man-with-a-van service made multiple tip runs and helped move essentials to his new home.

A new chapter

By June 2025, Jim had moved into a lovely bungalow on a sheltered housing estate.

His new home is comfortable and easy to manage. The estate has a gardening project and social groups, and Jim has embraced community life. He even goes to bingo every Saturday night (and recently won £40!).

Just one month after moving, Jim told us he no longer needed support sessions. He is happy, settled, and part of his community again. He says he’s so glad he made the move and recommends that anyone in a similar situation should do the same. Don’t struggle alone.
