DOH Launches Provider Demographic Data Collection
Beginning January 1, 2025, the Department of Health (DOH) began collecting demographic data from all health care providers. The requirement comes from the Engrossed Substitute House Bill (ESHB) 1503, passed during the 2023 legislative session.
Applicants must provide the following information when applying for or renewing a license:
Race
Ethnicity
Gender
Languages spoken
Provider specialty
Current practice status
Primary and secondary practice locations, if applicable
DOH will use this information only in aggregate form. Individual data will not be published or publicly identifiable. These reports may reveal meaningful insights into Washington state’s healthcare provider workforce, such as disparities in healthcare access, as well as provide patients with information that may inform decisions regarding their care.
While RCW 18.130.042(4) prevents DOH from selling the information, answers may be subject to public disclosure under the state Public Records Act (chapter 42.56 RCW)
Demographic information will not appear in the provider credential search tool.
