Borrow a thermal imaging camera to create a warmer home

Two people using a thermal imaging camera on a smartphone to check heat loss from a stone house with tiled roof and white door.

We’re now loaning thermal imaging cameras that can be used with your smartphone or tablet to help you identify where heat is escaping from your home. These cameras are available to borrow from our library service for up to 3 days, ideally during cold, cloudy weather.

With your heating on, simply use the camera to spot areas where warmth is leaking – such as through uninsulated roofs, gaps under doors, or around windows. The process is straightforward, and a helpful guide is provided to get you started.

There are several simple, cost-effective ways to tackle heat loss. Consider installing draught strips under doors and in letterboxes, hanging thermally lined curtains in front of windows and doors, making your own draught excluder, or adding roof insulation – sometimes available for free.

To borrow a thermal imaging camera, email librariesmail@somerset.gov.uk or ask at your local library. Please note, there is a waiting list for the Android-compatible camera. However, if you use an iPhone or iPad, you can usually borrow the iOS version more quickly – or even borrow an iPad from the library if needed.

Take this opportunity to make your home warmer, save energy, and support Somerset’s climate goals.
