Council Adopts Mendip Local Plan Part II Limited Update

Mendip Adopted Local Plan Part II Limited Update - September 2025We've formally adopted the Mendip Local Plan Part II Limited Update, marking a key commitment in the Local Development Scheme.

The Limited Update addresses a High Court Order issued in December 2022, which required us to identify replacement housing allocations following the quashing of 5 sites in the original Plan. After a comprehensive review of 162 potential sites, 9 new housing sites have been selected, capable of delivering 569 homes by 2029.

The Limited Update underwent public consultation, environmental assessments, and a formal examination by Planning Inspector, Clive Coyne in March 2025. His report, received in August 2025, confirmed the Plan (with agreed Main Modifications) is legally compliant and sound. The Inspector praised our robust site selection process and confirmed the Plan aligns with national planning policy.

Adoption of the Limited Update ensures we meet our legal obligations, as well as strengthening the development framework for Somerset East. It also supports the delivery of affordable housing, with 2 sites allocated for 100% affordable provision.

The updated Plan will now form part of our statutory Development Plan and guide future planning decisions.

We'll publish the adoption documents and update the online policies map in due course.
