Foreign-Trained Dentists - Is There an Alternative Pathway to Becoming a Licensed Dental Hygienist?

Question: Is there an alternative pathway for foreign-trained dentists to obtain a dental hygiene license in Washington state without completing the same requirements as other applicants?

Answer: Foreign-trained dentists must enroll in and complete an accredited U.S. dental hygiene program. They must also meet the dental hygiene licensure requirements:

• Graduate from a dental hygiene program accredited by the Commission on Dental Accreditation (CODA) or its successor recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.
• Successful completion of the National Board Dental Hygiene Examination (NBDHE).
• Pass an approved clinical examination accepted by the Washington State Department of Health (DOH).
• Pass a Washington State Drug and Law Exam.
• Meet all other administrative requirements, such as paying an application fee and passing background checks.
