The Big Butterfly Count is a nationwide citizen science survey that helps us assess the health of our environment. Launched in 2010, it has quickly become the world’s largest butterfly survey.

In 2022, over 64,000 citizen scientists took part, submitting 96,257 records of butterflies and day-flying moths from across the UK.

This year’s Big Butterfly Count runs from 1 July to 10 August 2025, so there’s still time to get involved. All the counts are displayed on an interactive map.

It’s easy to take part – just spend 15 minutes on a bright, sunny day to enter all the butterflies and day-flying moths you see into an app. There’s no limit to the number of 15-minute surveys you wish to undertake.

To download the app and discover why it’s so important to monitor our butterfly populations, visit the Butterfly Conservation’s Big Butterfly Count website.
