In June, the State Board of Education adopted new school leadership standards, the Professional Standards for Educational Leadership (PSEL).
Oregon uses standards to define what teachers and administrators should know and be able to do. Districts are required to use these standards to build their evaluation and support systems. Currently, school districts use the Oregon Educational Leadership/Administrator Standards, which are aligned with the 2008 Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) standards to develop these critical systems to evaluate and support leaders.
The adoption of PSEL to replace the ISLLC standards comes as part of a broader understanding that strong education leadership plays a crucial role in improving student outcomes. Research consistently demonstrates that school leaders are second only to classroom teachers in their impact on student learning and achievement. By providing leadership that is focused on improving teaching practices, fostering a positive school culture, and ensuring equitable educational opportunities, school leaders can drive substantial improvements in student performance.
