Have yourself a sustainable Somerset Day

Did you hear that Somerset Day is 11 May! And this year it’s being celebrated across the weekend from 10 – 11 May.

The Big Picnic returns to celebrate community, food and fun indoors or outdoors in 2025.

Whether you’re gathering in your local hall, a community space, or hosting a garden party at home, this is your chance to come together and celebrate Somerset Day in style.

Top tips to make your picnic sustainable!

  • Make it single use free: take reusable plastic plates with you, check local charity shops if you need some low cost options – or re-donate if no longer needed after your gathering. Remember, used paper plates can’t be recycled – please throw out in your general rubbish.
  • Dispose BBQs responsibly: Barbeques can cause hazards and fires. Please avoid disposable barbeques as they create unnecessary waste. But if you do use one, it must be left to cool before it’s thrown away otherwise it may be a fire hazard.

After it’s been left to cool for a few hours, pour some cold water on top to be sure, as they can hold heat for a  long time. When you’re sure it’s cool, you can dispose of it in your general rubbish bin.

  • Use up your leftovers: check out Love Food Hate Waste for recipes to love you’re leftovers! If you don’t eat everything, work out what can be frozen to make it last for another day.
  • Recycle and take your rubbish home: leave nothing but footprints after your picnic. Remember to pick up any rubbish and leftovers and take them home with you, to sort and recycle.
