Call for school Climate Ambassadors

The Department for Education’s (DfE) Sustainability and Climate Change Strategy, published in April 2022, sets out the expectation that all nurseries, schools and colleges have a Climate Action Plan and a named Sustainability Lead by December 2025. Climate action planning adopts a whole-institution approach, addressing 4 pillars:

  • Decarbonisation,
  • Adaptation and Resilience,
  • Biodiversity, and
  • Climate Education and Green Careers.

Funded by the DfE, and based at the Met Office in the Southwest, the Climate Ambassador programme offers free specialist support from a diverse network of volunteers from across private, public, charity and education sectors who can offer guidance and support to help develop and deliver impactful Climate Action Plans.

Climate Ambassadors can assist schools in 3 ways:

  1. At a strategic level in developing climate action plans.
  2. By supporting the implementation of climate action plans through curriculum themes and projects
  3. By being a member of the school community as governors, senior leaders, members of a Multi Academy Trust or sustainability leads, building school capacity and agency.

You don’t need expertise in all areas of climate action planning. All Climate Ambassador training and DBS checks are free. If you’re interested in becoming a Climate Ambassador or you’d like to request support from an existing Climate Ambassador, email climateambassadors_sw@metoffice.gov.uk for more information.
