BLS Certification Requirements for Dental Staff
WAC 246-817-720 Dental staff providing direct patient care in office or outpatient settings must maintain a current and valid healthcare provider BLS certification. Certification—initial or renewal—must include both didactic and hands-on components.
Certification Standards BLS certification must be issued by an instructor, organization, or training center certified in the current ILCOR standards, such as the American Heart Association or American Red Cross. Instruction must include:
Online or in-person didactic instruction with a written assessment
In-person skills assessment covering:
High-quality chest compressions
Rescue breathing using a bag valve mask
Correct AED/defibrillator use for adults, children, and infants
Feedback for students
Issuance of a valid certification card upon completion
Applicability Direct patient care providers include licensed dentists, dental hygienists, expanded function dental auxiliaries, certified dental anesthesia assistants, and registered dental assistants.
New Hires Newly hired staff providing direct patient care must obtain the required certification within 45 days of their hire date.
