1937 Winter Storm - In January, Salem was hit by a surprise blizzard that dumped 24 inches of snow, with drifts reaching 32 inches. The storm caused significant damage, collapsing roofs, and blocking roads, leading to school closures and supply shortages. Despite limited snow removal equipment, the community rallied, with temporary workers and residents working alongside city officials to improvise plows for clearing impassable streets. A local paperboy even delivered his route on skis. “The Big Snow” remains a pivotal event in Salem's history, highlighting the crucial role of volunteers in ensuring communities can endure and recover from emergencies.
