Hazel - A fantastic small tree traditionally coppiced for hurdles and thatching spars.
Collect the nuts before the squirrels find them and sow immediately into a shallow seedbed or pot. Protect this from mice and leave in a cool, damp place. In the spring pick out the nuts that have germinated and discard the others.
Sweet chestnut - Coppiced for fencing posts and the nuts roasted. It provides one of the best nesting sites for nightingales.
Collect the fattest nuts and remove them from their spikey exterior casing. Sow immediately, protect them from pests and plant out the ones that have germinated in the spring.
Walnut - This is a valuable tree for wildlife and the timber prized by furniture makers. Collect and sow the seeds the same as chestnut and hazel.
