Thanks to funding from the national ‘Recycle your Electricals’ campaign, the two-month trial allows the residents of St Athelm Lodge, Wells, to responsibly dispose of small electrical items through a pink wheelie bin.
Electrical items cover anything with a plug or that takes batteries and can fit into the wheelie bin, so items like hairdryers, toasters, headphones and DVD players.
Most households in Somerset can recycle small electricals via their weekly kerbside recycling collection, however, this option is not available to residents that have communal collections (for example people who live in flats).
The Fixy project supported the launch last week, and collected donations of smart tech for reuse, including smart phones, tablets and laptops. Its ‘Tech Amnesty’ collected 6 items during the launch event, with items passed on to Donate IT CIC, who securely data-wipe, refurbish, and pass items on to people in digital poverty.
Electrical items, that are too large to fit in a carrier bag should be taken to one of Somerset’s recycling sites. Alternatively, use the recycling locator function online via the Recycle your Electricals website.
