The Poe Center for Health Education, a nonprofit organization, is dedicated to improving the health of North Carolina's youth through educational programs. The center features an onsite museum, playground, and garden, offering a range of interactive learning experiences. During the summer, they host two week-long Healthy Habits Camp sessions focused on the importance of nutrition and physical activity, utilizing SNAP Ed resources and engaging activities. The camp offers daily lessons, songs, fun fitness activities, cooperative games, gardening, nutrition education, arts and crafts, and cooking demonstrations. Campers also receive breakfast and lunch courtesy of the USDA Sun Programs.
The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program Education (SNAP-Ed) is a federally funded grant program. SNAP-Ed is evidence-based and helps people make their SNAP dollars stretch, teaches them how to cook healthy meals, and lead physically active lifestyles. SNAP-Ed partners with State and local organizations to meet people where they are. SNAP-Ed funds projects in all US States and Territories. The goal of SNAP-Ed is to implement a nutrition education and obesity prevention program for eligible individuals that promotes healthy food choices and physical activity consistent with the most recent Dietary Guidelines for Americans.
FNS chooses projects based on their effectiveness. All projects adhere to the SNAP-Ed Guiding Principles.
