Feed your family, not the bin!

What's in the bin at home?

Did you know that a staggering 21% of our general rubbish bin is food waste! When you recycle food, you help to protect the environment.

Our contractor, Biffa, processes food waste for us via anaerobic digestion – and it happens right here in Somerset.

Not sure what this means? We took a tour of the site near Bridgwater to reveal all!

Grab your high-vis and join the tour by watching the following video:

Last year we collected more the 23 tonnes of food waste - and it was all recycled in Somerset!

When you recycle food waste, rather than throw it out mixed in the rubbish, it gets turned into:

  • Fertiliser, used by local farmers. Going on our crops to help produce more food!
  • Bio-gas which is turned into electricity to power our homes

Reducing food waste is a great way to save money and help protect our environment. Planning ahead can help avoid unnecessary waste – the Love Food Hate Waste campaign shares tips to help us make the most of the food in our cupboards:

  • Create a weekly meal plan
  • Check your portions to avoid uneaten leftovers
  • Don’t put hot food straight in the fridge, let it cool first so it doesn’t increase the temperature
  • Keep fruit and vegetables in the fridge – it makes them last longer
  • Create an ‘eat me first’ space in the fridge – so you can keep tabs on food that needs using up

According to ‘Love Food, Hate Waste’, a staggering 60% of the UK’s food waste come from our homes – that’s eight meals a week!

We know that we’ll always have some food waste, so when food does have to go, make sure it’s recycled in the weekly recycling collection. Or if you home compost, you can add your veggies to it!
